Meet the Teacher

My name is Layla Carter Fields and I have been teaching for ten years; this is my fifth year at Southmont Elementary. I have taught first and third grades in both Christian and public schools. I graduated from Fayetteville Street Christian School in 1991 and received my bachelor's degree in education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. In the 2008-2009 school year, I became a member of the 100% club when all of my students passed the Math End of Grade Test. I was also recently named Outstanding Elementary Math Teacher of the Year for Randolph County Schools by the North Carolina Council for Teachers of Mathematics.

I grew up in Ramseur and Franklinville and am the oldest of six children. I have four sisters and one brother. I love being part of a big family, which includes three nieces and five nephews! My mom is a kindergarten teacher and my dad recently retired to go into full-time Christian service. I have been married for 16 years to Craig Fields. We have three children, Carter is 15, Camden is 3 and Lauren is a year old. Carter will be playing soccer this year and I am very excited about seeing him play! Camden makes me laugh everyday with all of his questions and observations and Lauren is a joy to watch as she discovers the world around her!

I love reading, going to church and spending time with my family!
